First Female Australian Trainer To Win The Melbourne Cup - Gai Waterhouse
Date of Record: 05/11/2013
Gai Waterhouse made history by becoming the first female Australian trainer to win the Melbourne Cup, the country's most prestigious horse race.
The 3.2 km's, 6 million dollar race kicked off at 3pm on November 5, 2013.
Gai watched her pre-race favourite Fiorente set off from barrier 5, and fend off competition from some of the world's best to take out the prized trophy.
It was public knowledge that Gai wanted to win 'the major of all events', that of course, was the Melbourne Cup.
Champion horse Fiorente's preparation was in Melbourne and Gai was confident he was primed for the occasion.
Victorious jockey Damien Oliver won the Flemington race for the third time in his career.
Gai was granted her Australian Jockey Club licence in January 1992.
