Most Number of Test Matches Played - Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting

Date of Record: 03/12/2012

Steve Waugh made his final test appearance on January 2 2004 against India. A record final day crowd of more than 27,000 attended the Sydney Cricket Ground, affectionately displaying their appreciation far beyond the game conclusion. He was chaired around the ground by his team-mates at the end of his record 168th and final Test match.

This record was equaled on Monday December 3 2012 when Ricky Ponting, sporting the baggie green cap for Australia, played his final Test in Perth, at the venue where he'd made his debut in the five-day format some 17 years ago.

Set an unlikely 632 to win, the Aussies lost by 309 runs as the tourists retained the world No. 1 ranking and became the first team to win consecutive series in Australia since the West Indies in 1992-93.

Ricky Ponting's retirement left him with a phenomenal 168 test appearances now equaling Steve Waugh's record achievement!

Mathematically it will be years before this record is beaten.
